Two nights ago we went to see the fireworks in downtown Norfolk for the 4th of July. The fireworks were spectacular. In front of us was a couple that was taking a selfie. Twenty minutes they were still taking a selfie movie. For the entire fireworks display, they were in the foreground.
Contrast that to the Apostle John. Even though St. John was probably Jesus’s cousin, the one Jesus loved, he never mentions himself by name. He never says – “Look at me – I was at the cross when the other 10 disciples had fled.” No, he stays in the background.
